Acclimation Programs for Kids

Learning, connecting, and growing through culture and care.

Overview

The transition to a new country can be overwhelming—especially for children. Spokane Slavic Association offers culturally responsive acclimation programs to help Slavic immigrant and refugee youth adjust to life in the United States. Our programs are tailored to different age groups and emphasize confidence-building, language development, social integration, and family bonding.

Play & Learn (Ages 0–5 and Parents)

Our Play & Learn program is designed for young children and their parents. In a safe, welcoming, and Russian-speaking environment, children ages 0–5 engage in early learning through play, stories, songs, and hands-on activities.
Parents participate alongside their children, strengthening family bonds and learning how to support their child’s growth in a new cultural context.

Benefits:

  • Encourages early language and social development
  • Helps children adjust to group settings before preschool or kindergarten
  • Builds confidence in parents as their child’s first teacher
  • Strengthens community ties among families

STEM Learning Events (Ages 5–18)

Our STEM events use fun, interactive activities to spark curiosity and help older kids explore science, technology, engineering, and math—all in Russian. These programs blend hands-on learning with cultural connection, encouraging kids to think creatively while gaining confidence and making new friends.

Benefits:

  • Builds knowledge and interest in science and problem-solving
  • Boosts self-esteem and personal confidence
  • Encourages teamwork and peer connection
  • Creates a positive, structured environment for youth outside of school

Why These Programs Matter

Our acclimation programs do more than entertain—they provide vital support for immigrant families during critical years of development. When children feel seen, safe, and supported, they are more likely to thrive at home, in school, and in the broader community.
These programs also:

Help preserve native language and cultural identity

Encourage healthy parent-child relationships

Reduce isolation for newcomer families

Strengthen the community by building resilient, confident youth
