What we do

From Immediate Needs to Long-Term Opportunity

Spokane Slavic Association helps individuals and families move from immediate needs toward greater stability, opportunity, connection, and self-sufficiency.

Our work is organized through five integrated strategic pillars that address different stages of that journey.

Some people first connect with SSA because they need clothing, information, or help finding a resource. Others come to improve their employment opportunities, start a business, participate in family activities, discover community events, volunteer, or build new connections.

Wherever someone enters, our goal is to help create a pathway toward the next opportunity.

International Resource Center & Community Services

Find Resources. Get Connected. Take the Next Step.

The International Resource Center & Community Services pillar often serves as an entry point into SSA.

It helps individuals and families address immediate needs, understand available resources, overcome language or document barriers, and connect with appropriate services.

Services may include access to donated clothing and household essentials, resource navigation, referrals, translation and interpretation, notary services, basic document assistance, food resources through partners, and connections to other community organizations.

When SSA does not provide a needed service directly, we work to help people identify an appropriate organization or resource.

Workforce & Economic Mobility

Build Skills. Find Opportunity. Move Forward.

Employment can be one of the most important steps toward long-term stability and economic independence.

SSA's Workforce & Economic Mobility pillar helps people prepare for employment, strengthen workplace skills, improve practical English, connect with employers, and explore opportunities for career advancement.

Support may include job search assistance, resumes and applications, interview preparation, workplace readiness, digital skills, professional development, practical English, employer connections, and referrals to specialized training or educational opportunities.

SSA also works with employers and community partners to help connect workforce needs with potential employees.

Business Development Center

Start. Connect. Grow.

For some people, the pathway toward economic mobility leads to entrepreneurship.

SSA's Business Development Center helps aspiring entrepreneurs and existing business owners develop ideas, strengthen businesses, connect with customers and professionals, and participate in the local economy.

Entrepreneurs may receive guidance related to business planning, startup processes, marketing, financial preparation, customer development, and growth while being connected with specialized professionals and community resources when needed.

Established businesses can also participate through networking, the Business Directory, educational activities, partnerships, hiring opportunities, sponsorships, and other forms of community engagement.

Clean Start demonstrates another part of this pathway by combining earned income, workforce experience, business development, and entrepreneurship.

Youth & Family Engagement

Learn. Connect. Explore. Belong.

Self-sufficiency is about more than employment and financial stability.

Strong families and communities also need opportunities to learn, build relationships, stay active, experience new things, and feel connected.

SSA's Youth & Family Engagement pillar creates educational, recreational, cultural, and social opportunities for children, youth, women, families, immigrants, and newcomers.

Activities may include STEM education, Play & Learn, recreation, family outings, women's activities, community exploration, cultural and historical education, outdoor experiences, personal development, and opportunities for newcomers to build relationships with their new community.

Communications & Community Engagement

Inform. Connect. Participate.

Opportunities only create impact when people know they exist and have a way to participate.

SSA's Communications & Community Engagement pillar helps connect people with information, organizations, businesses, resources, events, opportunities, and one another.

This work includes multilingual communication, community announcements, public information campaigns, storytelling, outreach, events, community feedback, organizational collaboration, and platforms that make community information easier to discover.

The Community Calendar also helps connect people with activities and opportunities offered by SSA and other organizations throughout the community.

One Organization. One Connected Pathway.

The five pillars are not independent departments working in isolation.

They are designed to connect.

A person may first visit the International Resource Center for clothing or household essentials.

During that visit, they may learn about employment assistance.

Employment support may lead to professional development and a better job.

A worker may eventually decide to start a business.

That business may join the SSA Business Directory, hire employees, sponsor a community activity, or become an SSA partner.

At the same time, the person's children may participate in youth activities, the family may attend community events, and they may eventually volunteer or help another newcomer navigate the same journey.

The pathway can look different for every person.

We Don't Have to Provide Everything Ourselves

No single organization can—or should—provide every service a community may need.

SSA focuses on what we can do effectively while building relationships with organizations that provide specialized services, expertise, and opportunities.

When another organization is better equipped to address a need, our role may be to make the connection.

This approach allows SSA to:

Accessible to a Diverse Community

SSA was founded from within Spokane's Slavic community and continues to maintain strong relationships with Slavic immigrants, newcomers, families, businesses, and community leaders.

At the same time, our work is not limited to one nationality or ethnic group.

SSA programs and opportunities are generally open to everyone, subject to the eligibility requirements of individual programs, grants, activities, or funding sources.
